If you’re new to gardening, there are a few basic tools that will be used regularly. If you have been gardening for years and have accumulated an arsenal of garden tools, then this next article might just serve as a reminder for your newer gardener friends who haven’t amassed quite so many tools yet. 

I’ll start with the basics first, but feel free to jump into the more advanced stuff at any time in the future if you need it. 

The most basic tool is probably your hand trowel. This tool can be used for planting seeds, transplanting seedlings, weeding, cleaning up around plants, and just about anything else related to gardening. It’s also one of those tools that, while not essential, can be very useful. I find myself using mine every day. 

Next on my list is the shovel – which I use often too. A good quality shovel has a nice wide blade, and should be able to handle digging deep holes for plantings or moving dirt around the garden. The length of the shovel is important too, because you don’t want to dig too deeply with one that’s too short. You could easily end up damaging a root system, especially when planting trees and shrubs. 

A good quality hoe is another tool that you’ll find yourself reaching for frequently. Again, it’s best to avoid cheap ones, as they tend to break down quickly and aren’t worth it in the long run. You want something sturdy, well balanced, and made from high quality materials. 

One last tool you’ll definitely want to have around is a pair of pruning shears. As with everything in life, prevention is better than cure, so take care of the health of your plants by keeping them trimmed. Prune roses and other flowering vines during their dormant season (usually late winter). Prune out dead wood on fruit bearing trees and shrubs. Remove spent flowers from perennials. Cut back perennials after blooming so that they can regrow fresh foliage for next year. 

As far as tools go, you’ll also want to have some fertilizer spreaders available for your garden. They come in all shapes and sizes, but they all work pretty much the same way. You fill the hopper with fertilizer, attach it to the front of the machine, and turn the handle to dispense whatever amount you want. There are even models that come with a small spray nozzle that you can mount on top of the tank if you’d like to add some extra control over the application of your fertilizer. 

If you’ve got a lawn mower, it makes sense to have a weed whacker handy. These handheld power units can get rid of grass clippings, leaves, twigs, and other debris without having to drag a lawnmower through the yard. They make it convenient to clean up around plants and flower beds. 

For larger areas, consider purchasing a rotary trimmer or string trimmer. String trimmers are more versatile, allowing you to cut grass around plants, hedges, and shrubs. Rotary trimmers are better suited for cutting large areas of grass, and are easier to maneuver around obstacles like fences. 

You may have noticed that, so far, I’ve only mentioned tools that are used for outdoorsy activities. That’s because I’m going to discuss indoor tools here shortly. For now, though, let’s move on to what I think are some of the most common items found inside our homes.
